Wakering’s season began with an opening fixture against Cheshunt. Wakering were determined to make a positive start against a good Cheshunt side. Both teams pass the ball comfortably, but some swift passing by Wakering opened up the Cheshunt defence for Peter Henry to open the scoring for Wakering. Wakering then took control of the match leaving Cheshunt with only limited efforts on the Wakering goal, which Captain, Alan Kumrou, handled with ease. A second goal, by Andrew Douglas, followed putting the match to bed. Excellent debuts by Glenn Mitchell and Mark Elnaugh. Cheshunt 0 Wakering 2
Second up for Wakering were Leyton Orient Reds. Leyton Orient are always a difficult team to breakdown, due to their defence style of play and getting players behind the ball. However, persistency, finally broke the deadlock with a well taken goal by Paul Tregent to win 1-0.
Third up were Little Oakley. Always a well organised team and normally only a goal separates the teams. Wakering were playing some lovely pass and move football, which opened up Little Oakley for Peter Henry to score. Now and then, Wakering’s crisp passing slowed and this allowed Little Oakley a couple of chances, which were either well saved by Alan Kumrou, or went wide. Once Wakering were back in their stride, Paul Tregent scored a well taken goal to make it 2-0 to Wakering.
Final match of the day was against Paringdon Pirates. Despite rotating the team throughout the morning, some tiredness was creeping in. However, this didn’t deter Peter Henry from carving out a solo goal with a chip over the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. This was soon followed by Peter’s second of the match to end the morning with a 2-0 victory for Wakering.
